TikTok encourages its more than one billion users to bring their most authentic selves to the platform through short-form video and LIVE. The brand needed a custom typeface that could help the app’s user interface keep up with the unique content its users create. In 2022, we began working with TikTok on a typographic system that could function across all mediums, both in-app and for brand and marketing purposes.

This new typeface would serve as a holistic solution across the brand, reflecting TikTok’s ambition to be a place for discovery and self-expression.

Creating TikTok’s New Type

In an app where new terminology is constantly invented, it only made sense to turn to the brand’s vocabulary to set the design tone for the project. We worked together with TikTok to co-create the project brief, where we outlined a distinct typographic identity that encompassed creative self-expression. This presented the opportunity to take a departure from the original typefaces present in the app and match it more closely with the energy of its creators. From the larger concept, key elements emerged that would carry through each revision to the end: sharp design features and edgy details all come together in TikTok Sans.

The Variable Axes

TikTok Sans is divided into two subfamilies: Brand, for all of their brand and marketing needs, and Text, optimized for the user interface. The design is expressed across four axes as a variable font: weight, optical size, upright to oblique, and a dark mode axis.

TikTok Sans has a weight range from Light to Black styles, covering a wide scope of expressive potential. The optical size axis allows for fine-tuning small type for functionality, while maximizing the expressiveness of larger type—this can automatically adapt to the chosen font size, always offering the right balance.

The upright styles can seamlessly morph into their slanted counterparts, holding great potential for animation in marketing applications. Dark mode optimizes the design for late-night TikTok binges—light text on a dark background appears a little heavier to the eye, and adjustments were made to balance the characters in this setting.

Display First, Text Next

As with all of our custom projects, we begin with the Display font. It’s a concept-driven process that aims to strengthen the existing brand and marry it with its future direction. This allows us to nail the brand expression first before moving on to optimize for smaller size requirements. The design of TikTok Sans offers an energetic expression that fits the user base while matching their experience with an app where things are always moving. The Display and Text subfamilies of TikTok Sans work together to maintain a cohesive typographic identity both in and outside of the app.

Quirky Details

TikTok Sans’ quirky details give the type an edgy, tech-forward vibe. Throughout the character set you’ll notice some details that are considered a little unconventional in the traditional typographic sense. For example, the straight-lined terminal on the bottom right of the a, the sharp line descender of the j, and the untraditionally shaped tail in the Q. On diagonal letters, the strokes join in a wide, flat apex that is cut into by the counter.

Simplified Shapes

For most characters, we opted for the more approachable shape: The G doesn’t have a spur (the little leg on the bottom right), and the u is without a stem. Simplifying the silhouettes of these characters supports an easy-going tone and no-nonsense functionality.

1M Views

Numbers are an integral part of TikTok’s user interface. TikTok Sans’ numbers also opt for simplified shapes. They are optimized for legibility with wide, open apertures and large counters.

Global Audience

TikTok Sans supports 576 languages across the Latin, Cyrillic, and Greek scripts. The final fonts contain 1,152 glyphs each, covering the accented characters, punctuation, and other special characters needed for these languages. The Cyrillic and Greek scripts were designed with assistance from expert type designers native to those scripts. The outcome? A typeface that caters to a broad range of creators and users. We’re excited to see TikTok Sans’ further expansion to support even more languages.

TikTok is a mobile-first platform, and this had to be heavily considered in the direction of the design. TikTok Sans, especially the Text version, pairs relatively narrow letters with generous spacing in between. This combination lets us marry readability at smaller sizes with typographic economy—It’s important that a user interface typeface doesn’t take up too much space horizontally so that everything can fit into the narrow design frame of a mobile phone.

The Text subfamily combines a tall x-height with other optical adjustments to make in-app text easier to engage with. The optical size axis is especially important here, to boost the functionality of TikTok Sans within the user interface in a way that doesn’t sacrifice legibility.

Rearranging the Living Room

When people use an app for hours each day, any small change can seem huge at first. Some people might feel a little unsettled when confronted with a new visual landscape, as if someone just moved around their living room furniture by a tiny bit—it takes time to get used to.

Type is an essential component to build recognizability and personality into the brand from the top down, filtering from an expressive brand and marketing typeface into a polished user interface typeface that can still contain a ton of personality. We’ve all been conditioned to expect super vanilla interfaces, but that’s not really necessary or necessarily good. Our project with TikTok proves that large apps can still successfully add stylistic choices to their interface, and make a bold move by showcasing their identity through their choices in type.
